How is typing speed measured?
Typing speed is shown in WPM (words per minute). Because words have different lengths, every 5 characters (including spaces and punctuation) count as one word. If you type 300 characters correctly in one minute, that is 60 WPM.
- Only correctly typed characters count toward your speed
- Spaces and punctuation count as characters
- The timer starts the moment you type the first character of a sentence
WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

How to type faster
- Start from the home row: rest your left index finger on F and your right index finger on J. Both keys have small bumps you can feel.
- Keep your eyes on the screen: not looking at the keyboard is the single biggest speed boost.
- Accuracy first: fixing typos costs more time than you think. Keep accuracy above 95% while you build speed.
- Five minutes a day: short daily practice beats long sessions once a week.
